Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle lies within everybody's grasp. All you need to succeed is personal motivation and an investment in good food and time to unwind. You'll work off the nutritious calories that you consume through exercise, sleep well at night and enjoy stress relief on a regular basis. These aspects of a positive lifestyle improve your physical and mental health, potentially raising your chances for living longer.

A Good Diet

To replenish your body's nutrient stores and gain energy in the morning, include breakfast in your lifestyle every day. The USDA suggests eating a nutrient-dense breakfast, or one that is high in vitamins, minerals and fiber and low in calories, detrimental solid fats, sodium and sugar. Fortified wheat-bran cereal and plain nonfat yogurt are examples of nutrient-dense foods. Ideally, a healthy diet plan follows the same formula for lunch and dinner, with ingredients chosen from each food group. Different foods from the vegetable, fruit, grain, protein and dairy groups provide broad nutrition.

Enough Sleep

Another aspect of your lifestyle complements your diet in fulfilling metabolic needs, and that is sleep. As you rest, your body undergoes cellular repair, appetite management and memory processing. When you give yourself ample time to complete these tasks -- seven to nine hours per night, according to the National Sleep Foundation -- you relieve strain on the body from daily activity. Address insomnia or practice self-control regarding late nights, for better health.

Adequate Exercise

The American Heart Association says that a healthy lifestyle requires activity to use up the calories that you get from your diet. Keep your moving parts in order and your weight under control with daily exercise. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity each day also promotes cardiovascular fitness and muscular flexibility. Strengthen your bones and muscles as well by adding push ups, resistance-band exercise or weight lifting to your program twice a week.

Periodic Stress Relief

Minor stress and major life changes cause hormonal changes that can build up in your body over time. Ongoing stress relief helps you prevent the headaches, back pain, trouble sleeping, high blood pressure and depression that can arise from this type of chronic tension. A healthy lifestyle incorporates relaxation techniques that can range from yoga and meditation to an intense game of racquetball. Make a point of scheduling time to do something you enjoy periodically to break the cycle of stress.
